Short History of 15th August – India’s Independence Day

India gained independence from British rule on 15th August 1947, after nearly 200 years of colonial rule. The freedom struggle was led by many great leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru , Subhas Chandra BoseSardar Patel, and countless others who fought with courage and non-violence.

The Indian National Congress played a key role in organising mass movements like the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920), Civil Disobedience Movement (1930), and Quit India Movement (1942). These movements awakened the spirit of freedom among Indians.

Finally, due to continuous pressure, protests, and changing global circumstances after World War II, the British decided to leave India. On 15th August 1947, India became a free and independent nation. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister, gave his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech at midnight.

This day is celebrated every year as Independence Day, with the Prime Minister hoisting the national flag at Red Fort, Delhi, and honoring the sacrifices of freedom fighters.
